Nancy Tembo Speech On Clean Up Day Designation

• Let me welcome you all to this press briefing on the “National Clean Up Day Initiative” in Malawi which the Government of Malawi, through my Ministry of Forestry and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government has designated.

• The theme for this initiative is: A clean Environment: My Right, My Responsibility.

*The Day will help Malawi to achieve the objectives of and align the country’s aspirations of a “clean, green and healthy environment for all the people of Malawi” as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, National Environmental Policy, Environment Management Act and the Local Government Act. **

• Through you members of the media, I wish to inform the general public that from now onwards, the afternoon of second Fridays of every month from 14:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs i.e. for 3 hrs is a National Clean–up Day as designated by His Excellency the State President, Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.

• On this particular day, all able Malawians are expected to be taking part in various cleaning up and greening activities of their surroundings such as: markets, offices, open spaces, beaches, industries, business places, schools, hospitals, streets, homes or cutting grass, trimming bushes alongside the roads, planting trees, in order to make our country clean.

• The National Clean-Up Day Initiative aims at contributing to cleanliness and greening of our country, instil a culture of cleanliness in Malawians and to promote a positive environmental behavioural change in the way Malawians manage waste in this country.

• The Day will help Malawi to achieve the objectives of and align the country’s aspirations of a “clean, green and healthy environment for all the people of Malawi” as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, National Environmental Policy, Environment Management Act and the Local Government Act.

• Among others, a National Clean-up Day will address the problems associated with indiscriminate waste disposal including: a) pollution of open spaces, water sources, and the environment in general; b) clogging and damage to storm drains and sewerage systems; c) release of greenhouse gases and toxic fumes; d) reduced aesthetic value of the environment; and e) creation of breeding places for disease-causing pathogens.

• To signify the National Clean-up Day, the State President, Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera will participate in cleaning up activities and thereafter will officially launch the initiative under the theme “A clean Environment: My Right, My Responsibility” on 11th November 2020 from 08:30 hrs at Chinsapo ground in Lilongwe.

• Following the launch, the general public, led by various society leaders will start clean-up activities from Friday 13th November, 2020 from 2 to 5 P.M and continue in this good practice in subsequent months.

• The Government is therefore urging all able Malawians to participate in the clean-up activities of their surroundings and desist from littering and indiscriminate disposal of waste so that we all live in a clean and healthy environment.

• Let me conclude by saying that a Clean Environment is everyone’s right but we must all take a responsibility to keep it clean, otherwise no one will come to make your environment clean.

• Let’s make Malawi clean so that we leave a healthy life.

• May God bless you all, May God bless our nation.
